Project Lion 2024
Project Lion was a large scale building / renovation project that ASOA conducted in collaboration with the AYDA Foundation at their partner school - Nalla Ndiaye in Saint Louis, Senegal.
Many thanks to our donors who contributed to the £11,697.79 used to execute this project.
Who are the AYDA Foundation? The Alliance for Youth Development in Africa is a senegalese nonprofit organisation that advocates for improved conditions for the youth to acquire the skills and confidence to excel in school and continue education. Together, we believe that insufficient education is a the root cause of many problems later in life, such as under-developed communication skills, poor health-related habits, a lack of knowledge, confidence and thus motivation to continue school.
As a chronically underfunded public school, Nalla Ndiaye is often struggling to make ends meet to maintain its education of 943 pupils aged 6-16. Some of the issues that they face are:
The classrooms are small and packed - with between 60-80 kids per class.
Students often lack workbooks, pens and pencils.
The desks are all very old and mostly broken.
The blackboards are poor quality and need replacing.
There are holes in the floors that are trip hazards.
The classrooms often flood in rainy season.
Over 3 months in beginning 24/6/24, we worked with local professionals to do a thorough renovation of the school and provide school supplies. By addressing all of the challenges listed above, this will impact tens of thousands of students that pass through the school in the years to come.
Although when it comes to maintaining a functional public school, there’s always more work to be done, and we continue to work closely with Nalla Ndiaye as a core pillar of the community of Darou district in Saint Louis.
In addition to this, we also provided 3 first aid sessions, 3 meals to 50+ vulnerable children and handed out 46 new pairs of shoes to kids in need.
